Random follow #221 - @CatherineQ

When I signed up to curate the @peopleofnz account I had no idea about who I would interact with or what sorts of people would I meet.  There are so many people from literally every corner of the world who intersect through the "People Of" or "We Are" accounts.  And the number of truly interesting people you get to talk to is magnified beyond imagination.

I can say that I have had the total privilege of discovering one New Zealand tweeter is achieving AMAZING things in the area of science and astrophysics in the United States.  @CatherineQ who is blazing her way forward in a career that incorporates both past knowledge but also future knowledge as well.

Reading someone's tweets and seeing them online can tell you quite a bit about who they are as a person and how they see the world.  When you add to that the way they describe themselves then you can build a very good understanding of the person.  This is how she describes herself -

"I am an astrophysicist, a passionate spirit, advocate and thinker with a lot to learn and a thirst for knowledge."

And her twitter bio says this -

"Astrophysicist, science communicator, over-thinker. One of@HuffPostscience Top 30 Physicists to follow. Autoimmune illness girl. Kiwi in US. Dogs rule."

One quick fact I know is that this lovely lady started out life in Christchurch and completed her undergraduate study there.  She is now based in North Carolina (but there's still nowhere quite like home).

So the question now stands - how does Catherine tweet?  Well, how about, we take a look -

"Wang, International Team Discover Why Massive Black Holes Consume Less Material Than Expected (UMass Amherst) http://www.umass.edu/newsoffice/article/wang-international-team-discover-why-super#.UiFhUwG_iaw.twitter … #space"

"The satellites are to be launched for the operators Eutelsat and Es'hailSat -of Paris and Qatar - and the Indian Navy. #Ariane5"

"T-minus 4 minutes and holding. Countdown has entered a planned hold for 45 minutes, 30 seconds leading to new launch time of 10:52a.m PDT."

Don't worry or fret though.  These are not the only tweets in her timeline.  In fact these specifically spacey one's are not the norm.  What are the norm tweets are interactions and conversations with other scientists, brilliant minds and links to news stories that would otherwise be outside the average persons scope of news awareness.

This kiwi is really going places.  Literally as in her physical location but even more so in her scientific research and understanding of the universe which benefits us all.  You can smarten up your timeline by following this fantastic lady.

Random follow #220 - @bopmafia

It takes a certain amount of pride, passion and damn hard work to support a sports team.  Week in and week out.  To turn up to the games and go along to practices.  To know who the players are by their first names.  To sit in the cold, rain and hail to watch your team pass, kick and chase a rugby ball from end to end.

In New Zealand there are two rugby teams who play in the higher divisions.  Each stakes their claim to be known as "The Bay".  There is only one real way to settle such an argument.  And that is over a good old fashioned rugby match.  This year it was the mighty BAY OF PLENTY STEAMERS who took the honors.  And the fact that they won can be attributed to not only the players but the faithful supporters as well.
Quite possibly one of the biggest (metaphorically not literally) supporters of The Bay is @bopmafia.  Week in and week out this number one supporter is there for every tackle, scrum, penalty, ruck and maul, conversion and throw in.  And just like the area that the team represents @bopmafia spreads himself across the entire Bay.  From Tauranga to Taupo, Rotorua to Reperoa.  Where The Bay plays he is there.

Yes this tweeter is all about The Bay.  He is also about rugby as a code.  Any rugby game that is on he is there and will letting you know how its going.  But also rugby league after the rugby union has finished is another thing that he enjoys watching and tweeting about.

It shouldn't be too much of a surprise to you by now what the average tweet looks like from this account -

"RIP Cliff Morgan, Welsh rugby great, commentator and broadcaster. #rugby"  <-- respect

"Previous tweet was the Bay team to play Auckland tomorrow at Eden Park #steamteam - ran out of characters to explain it!" <-- Bay proud!

"Craig Joubert reffing first Super game: "There seems to be 31 refs on the field". Glen Jackson: "and you're not even in the top 10". #gold" <-- an amazing sense of humour

Yes - this is an account dedicated pretty much entirely to sport.  And neither @bopmafia or myself have any apologies to make for that fact.  And when the rugby season comes to an end (does it ever end anymore) you will find the fun, frivolity and friendliness of  @bopmafia contributing to another sports account - @ByTheMinCricket.  Worth a follow?  Totally.  Especially if you want to rub in to the other Bay that we're the real one ;)

Random follow #219 - @MicheCaldwell

I was asked recently what nickname us New Zealanders call ourselves.  My answer was - we're all kiwi's.  It doesn't matter where you've come from or where you're going, if you have lived here at any stage or you still do live then you can proudly call yourself a kiwi.

@MicheCaldwell is a very lovely lady who lives in Taupo.  She made her away across the Tasman Sea to join us here in kiwi land and its her role to tell the world about how good our little country is.  She has an impeccable taste when it comes choosing somewhere to live.  Taupo is an incredibly picturesque place where natural beauty grows in abundance.

Its always a good sign (or at least an obvious one) when you have to trawl way back through someone's twitter timeline to find tweets that aren't conversations or replies to other people.  I much prefer these types of accounts to the other sort (grandstanding tweets).  When someone is truly engaging and really wanting to speak to people then they have just the right acumen to make a great tweeter.  Miche is just one of those people.

Here are a few stand alone tweets that will give you a bit of a sense of @MicheCaldwell tweets -

"I really wish people would read their emails & check they make sense B4 they hit send! Especially when they are trying to sell me something!"

"Why do they always butcher the Aussie anthem here?"

And

"Hubby's eyes are watering (and not from the onions he's chopping) after I told him about the 'fork incident' in Australia!"

Miche is a lady whose employment tasks are a definite opportunity.  Having the privilege of being able to showcase some of the very best bits about New Zealand leads to further chances to see New Zealand and interact with our very finest.  She is a lovely lady with great intelligence, genuine warmth and openness and she also enjoys sitting down and watching a good game of footy.  You couldn't wish for much else in a tweeter really.

To conclude - Miche quite proudly claims her Australian heritage in her twitter bio.  And I have no issue with that.  Except to say - Miche - if you're here long enough you'll soon be calling yourself a kiwi too ;)

Random follow #218 - @duckenvy

Not every great twitter account is a real person.  Some really fantastic accounts are one's where people take on a character or a persona that lets them tweet or interact in a different way than they normally would.  And its just those exact types of accounts that can bring a different type of hilarity and freshness to the social media world.

@duckenvy is just one of those accounts.  With a bio that reads "I'm not a real duck" you don't really know what you're going to get.  What I can say is that the Duck keeps it real and has an ability to drop some pretty cool one liner tweets.  Such as -->

"Schooly Dee Lite La Soul II Men At Work #BandMergers"

And the Duck also strings together different types of trending tweets to make a whole new thing -->

No subject is off limits for the Duck -->

"You reckon we could get Labour to put up Tame Iti against Peter Dunne?"

But at the same time though alongside the funny tweets there is a certain undercurrent of brutal honesty that comes through as well.  Not trolling or attacking people but saying straight up what their thoughts are.  See here -->

"Yo, Aussie, fark ya nuclear tomatoes yo."

If you are in the hunt for a new twitter account that will both humour you as well as keep you on your toes then I recommend following @duckenvy.  Its like Forrest Gump's mumma said - "You never know what you're gonna get"

Random follow #217 - @robotexplosion

When you open up someone's twitter page to check out their profile and the first thing you see is a photo of a sexy man - well, I'm not sure what to say really.  @robotexplosion is a very lovely lady who tells you exactly how it is right from the get go.  Four small words in her bio tell you so much about what she is about

"CATS AND ROLLER SKATES"

And to be fair to her you won't find too many cat tweets in her timeline but you will find nice tweets and links to the most feminine of sports - roller derby.  Being based in New Zealand's capital city of Wellington she lives in what could be described as the number one get away destination for everyone else in the country.

Kim is a lady who really enjoys the interaction and conversations that twitter brings with it.  She merrily goes about her tweeting business without causing too much fuss or bother to people.  Warm, generous and open would be the three words that come to mind first to describe her online personality.

And yes of course she has a sense of humour!  See -->

"Whenever there is a group of males in the crowd I don't recognise on the VMAs I just assume its one direction. I'm getting old."

But her ability to see the funny side of life doesn't finish with her tweets.  If you have a look through her photo's you'll see some VERY funny pictures and stories there.  And yes - there may be one or two cat pictures.  But they are REALLY nice ones.

And she also has the ability to laugh at not only those around her but at herself as well -

"Number of people I have seen talking to themselves in the last minute: 3" and
"Make that 4"

And just as a hint you may want to start following this account really soon 'cos the Duchess herself is off on holiday to the USA.  So who knows what sort of tweets we can expect?  Good one's I hope!  The good lady Kim has been counting down the days on her timeline and there literally only a very few days left now before she goes.

If you're looking for a twitter friend who is never too far away, always has something nice to say and will brighten up your day - then @robotexplosion is just the lady for you.  Enjoy!

Random follow #216 - @_Bobble_Head

This could quite possibly be the shortest #RKT to date.  When a twitter bio states that there is "nothing to see here" then you could be fooled into thinking just that.  But in the case of this tweeter the opposite is actually the truth.

This hard case guy shoots so straight you could lay bricks with his tweets.

"First day back at work done... I guess I'll show up for day 2.. wasn't all bad"

He is also an incredible dad who happily shares his love for his boys via the instagram app.  Mr @_Bobble_Head is relatively new to the whole twitter scene with just a few hundred tweets to his name but he tweets with so much ease its like he has been doing it for years.

"Feeling quite exhausted.. think I broke my legs with all the walking these last few days.."

And yes - this post is quite short today.  But thats only because if you really want to know if someone is worth following or not - then you need to spend some time with them yourself.  In real life I am picking this is one tweeter you could spend heaps of time with and it would be a worthwhile investment.

If you follow someone long enough and interact with them you can get a pretty good sense of who they are as a person.  From what I have seen of @_Bobble_Head he is an incredibly nice guy who loves his offspring with everything he has.  He is honest and genuine but tempers it with his easy going personality.  And if there was just one tweet that could sum him up, it would be this one.......

"Sun is shining, I'm not at work, and about to go ride for a bit.. perfect ending to my holiday :-)"

Random follow #215 - @sppiinny

One little town that generally keeps itself hidden away and under wraps is the brilliant little town of Wanganui.  It really is a gem that many New Zealanders assume is just another town with not much special about it.  Well anyone who thinks that would be wrong.  Wanganui is a fantastic town with much to offer and plenty of things to do.  And just for the record - I could happily move to Wanganui and be happy.  It truly is a very special little town.

And the same goes for its tweeters.  @sppiinny is one of the very few tweeters that I follow that hail from that part of the country.  Rachel is a really hard case tweeter from that part of the world who brings a very down to earth sense of humour to twitter.  Not everyone would understand her sense of humour but I find it fantastic.

Its very much a sense of humour that comes from knowing what life is about and maybe having found that out a bit sooner than most other people.  And there is the small town flavor that permeates her stream -

"One thing I find funny about Wanganui is there is a Chinese restaurant called Beijing and a few blocks away, there used to be Hong Kong.."

See the thing is people in small towns remember these sorts of details.  They also remember who you are and the people who are important in their lives - maybe a little more readily than the rest of us do.

And I just checked something else - she has OVER 22 thousand tweets!!!  How can someone who is such a good tweeter have so few followers and SO MANY tweets???  And if someone has that many tweets what do they use them on?  Well if Rachels in real life behavior -

"HAHAHA!! Talking with a perfect stranger about City of Bones and Beautiful Creatures!! #Awesome"

then its fair to assume she is a very warm, open and conversational person who will make time to interact with anyone.  And yes she is at the younger end of the scale so that helps to bring a new flavor to your timeline.  I love this little series of tweets 'cos I know they are true!!!  See here  -->

"Note: When a computer says it'll take 2 minutes to copy something, it's like your mum saying she'll be 5 minutes on the phone..."

"It's always a lie. They always take quite a while longer #ttrttpt"

So if your timeline is feeling a little (dare I say it) old and it needs a bit of freshening up - then @sppiinny may be just the ticket for you.  (Please note - if you check out her timeline today - there is one tweet that may be a little not your style.  Please don't let one tweet out you off from following a fantastic tweeter.  Thanks)

Random follows #213 and #214 - @smithxml and @RyanJLSmith

"Two is always better than one" so the saying goes.  Well with todays two follows - two definitely IS better than one.  This brother and sister duo bring a whole new meaning to sibling rivalry.  Especially on twitter.  They are quite happy to wind each other up and make sure that the other one isn't getting too big for their boots.

These two are totally chalk and cheese.  So one would like to think.  But I reckon (and I know I am going to get grief for this) I actually think they are more similar than they are different.  And it is exactly that point that makes them fight and, dare I say it, squabble!  LOL.

But to know them and follow them as tweeters they must be taken as individuals for even though they are similar in so many ways they are equally just as different from each other too.

@smithxml is one of the most straight shooting ladies on twitter today.  She doesn't give away too much away about herself personally (which is a good thing) but if you have a sneaky glance through her photo's this girl has a body to DIE FOR!  Its not easy to keep yourself looking good but, boy oh boy, if anyone can make the reason to exercise look good it is definitely

She also comes with a very honest sense of humour.  The use of colourful language is a norm but that is just another reason to like her.  She doesn't muck around talking bollocks but she tweets straight.  And just cos she talks and tweets straight doesn't mean she isn't a lady.  Cos she totally is.  She has very fine taste in all things feminine AND she can sing too!  Seriously - this woman has it ALL!

Don't think she is silly though.  Hell no!  Far from it.  @smithxml is exceptionally savvy, intelligent and has a radar that can sense when someone is telling her bullshit from miles away.  Except she lives in Australia....

And then there's @RyanJLSmith.  The newest member of twitter that I follow this guy has figured out social media and what it takes to be a great tweeter in almost no time at all.  Having chalked up his first century of tweets, started following 60 or so tweeters and 40 following back (all within his first week) he is well on his way to twitter infamy.

He is also in Australia but we won't hold that against him.  Much.  So I really don't know much about Ryan except for what I have seen appear in this tweets this week.  So its probably best if we have a look at a few of those.

"Sent mate a tweet asking "how big is your block mate" and autocorrect changed BLOCK to DICK!Thank God I realised before sending!!"

"150 Boy Scouts camping on our farm for the weekend.8 paddocks to the north 150 Girl Guides are also camping on our property. Both unaware!"

"Shot up to 40 followers.Look at me go. #rockstar"

So in short these two tweeters are ready to tweet.  They don't take any bollocks but at the same time are incredibly loyal people.  They have their feet on the ground and will happily "chew the cud" with any decent person who can hold down a decent conversation.  Random follows #213 and #214 are well worth the follow.  I recommend them (so they must be all right.  For people in Aussie).

Random follow #212 - @dinosaureyesx

Planning a wedding is a stressful job, so I've been told, but planning a wedding and moving countries in less than a week is double the stress! But that is exactly what tonights, not so random tweeter, @Dinosaureyesx is doing. I say not so random because both @HagmanNZ and myself have followed the lovely @Dinosaureyesx (who shall be known from here on in as D), for well over a year now and TOMORROW is her wedding day.  And if you think arranging a wedding is easy, then think again!  -->

"oh my stars, i have a LOT to organise. eeek."

Most people have months, even years to plan their wedding but D has pulled her wedding together in just a few weeks and that in itself is no mean feat. But surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, there is no mention of her wedding in her tweets. Now D is by no means a prolific tweeter but when she does tweet they light up your timeline like this beauty:
"trying to decide if Aloo Gobi (indian cauliflower) goes with baked salmon. I say yes."

This tweet tells me D isn’t afraid to try new things. That tweet was also a food tweet and D’s timeline is filled with food related tweets.  Well not filled with, more like dotted with.  Like this one :

"Cleaning out my pantry (and fridge and freezer) because it's only one week until @TheFoodShow !!!"

So what do some of her other tweets look like, well check out these two:

"I think I am a weee bit crazy. Just decided to organise something that's a tiny bit huge and time consuming."

This tells me she likes a challenge (One can only assume that challenge is organizing a wedding!) and -

"Chilling out at home, nachos, Nigellissima and knitting. Knitting almost completes the alliteration."

D is one tweeter I would dearly LOVE to meet in real life but if that is going to happen it would have to be this weekend because next week she leaves NZ to move overseas with her new husband. And this weekend she is a bit busy getting married - so I guess I will go visit her after she moves!

To sum up, lets look at her Twitter bio. D has one of my favourite bios in Twitterland. It reads:

"Grumpy 20-something meatatarian, with eyes and an x."

I don't really know why I like this bio but I do.  Maybe it is because it gives nothing away about her as a person.  Apart from the fact she eats meats, has eyes and an x, and is 20 something.  But I don't believe for one minute that D is grumpy.  There is nothing in her timeline that would indicate she is.  So I'm just going to put it out there that I think the word “grumpy” in her bio should be replaced with DELIGHTFUL!  Yes -  delightful.

Good luck and all the very best from all of us on twitter.  We wish you the most happiest of wedding days tomorrow!! You totez deserve to have the best day ever!!!

(Note - this post was specially written by @pammygirl as a special gift for @Dinosaureyesx )

Random follow #211 - @SnapSnapSwim

When you open up twitter for the day and the very first tweet you come across is "When I die I want my ashes scattered on Nigella Lawson. I hope she's ok with that" you pretty much know that you've hit the jackpot of social media.

@SnapSnapSwim is a bright star in a dark universe of tweeters.  Nick brings a very different approach and feel to the way twitter works.  He is not content to recycle other peoples tweets or wade in to whatever the most popular hashtag of the day is but he brings his own voice to the game.

He has a voice that brings to you the best of the culinary world -

"Crumpet or wine? Crumpet or wine? ... Crumpet AND wine!! WIN!"

He talks about one of my most favorite subjects -
"Boobs"
And he is also embraces the spirit of the quintessential metrosexual male.  He knows what style is (and isn't)

"Seems you get what you pay for when you get a $13 mall haircut."

There are a few other things you need to know about @SnapSnapSwim too in order to understand him in the fuller context of who he is.  He is a married man with both children and cats.  Please note - they do come seperately.  He is also based out of Wellington - which should come as no surprise because there are SO MANY fantastic people in that part of the country.

Nick is a conversational type who picks which conversations of most appeal to him.  He is not a yeller or a dominator of conversation but more of a engager and facilitator amongst people.  There is hardly a tweet that reaches the 140 character limit that twitter imposes so he keeps his messages short and to the point.  Also he tweets only as he needs to so you won't be over run by volume.

@SnapSnapSwim emphasises why this project exists.  He is a fantastic tweeter whom not many know about or follow but the quality far outweighs the quantity.  It is the people like Nick who go about their business tweeting, interjecting and giving us something to laugh about in our timelines who make the world of twitter and social media truly come alive.

And then after all is said and done with his funniness, jovial tweets and raucous hilarity - he blindsides you.  With a description that leaves many quivering in fear at its intellectual magnitude -

"The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me."

Random follow #210 - @IrnBruja

Some people (like me) have avatar pictures that look absolutely NOTHING like they do in real life.  In the case of todays tweeter their avatar of choice is a picture of The Rocketeer crossed with a hamster?  Anyway what does this mean?  Well not much too be honest if you're thinking about them as a person.

But if you are thinking about them as a social media personality and character then @IrnBruja is one of those awesome people who will keep you guessing.  And guessing in a good way.  Where is the beauty in social media if there is no mystery?

This young lady knows EXACTLY where she stands on the issues that affect her.  She is an outgoing, energetic, strong minded and yet completely friendly person who doesn't stand for any BS from anyone.  She has a really great amount of tweets and those tweets are really broad in both their appeal and their scope.

And when I say diverse here are a few examples -

"11pm on a Tuesday. I'm drunk, listening to hip-hop and writing about reverse cowgirls. Life."  (I totally get this).

"Today fuelled by coffee and intense political discussion. Hungry though."  (Completely understand)

"Have quit both smoking and shaving under my arms. Both significant in different ways."  (This one I don't quite get)

So as you can see @IrnBruja has a very diverse set of interests and a very interesting approach to twitter.  She shares only that which she wants you to know (a definite bonus) and what you see is what you get.  Being Auckland based is neither here nor there really.  Her intense love for life coupled with a very interesting perspective on life  makes her a very welcome addition to any timeline.

And if you really do need any more convincing that @IrnBruja is actually awesome, then check out this tweet right here -

"Things that do not go well together: a full stomach and an emergency stop."
('Nuff said)

Random follow #209 - @SkinnyInny

"441,849,636 seconds of marriage today and I don't regret any of them :)"

You can tell alot about a person by the way they tweet.  If that first tweet up there ^^ is anything to go by then you should be able to tell that Mark (aka @SkinnyInny) is an incredible bloke who knows exactly what his priorities are.

Hailing from the giant metropolis that is Palmerston North this nice guy has recently joined the twitter community to share his insights and sense of humour with the world.  Not only does he share a really good RT every now and then he also tweets some really great one liners too -
"The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office."  Robert Frost.

What else can we tell by examining his tweets?  Well he is an animal owner.  But I reckon it takes more effort to own some animals than others.  For example -

"My dogs do chameleon poos. Outside they match their surroundings so they are detectable only by foot. Inside they contrast with the carpet."

See a cat owner would never understand the humor behind that.  Owning a dog is so completely different from owning a cat.  Really.

So if you're looking to follow someone on twitter who won't clog up your timeline but will drop n an occasional tweet that makes you stop and think - hmmmm..... then Mark is your man.  And if you decide to follow @SkinnyInny please spare him a thought as he prepares himself to take on a massive new undertaking - "If you're doing dry July, please consider donating your saved alcohol to me. I am attempting to launch Wettember. #dryjuly #wettember".

Random follow #208 - @hurley_kate

When it comes to random tweeters who need some coverage and spotlight then todays person has it all.
@hurley_kate is pretty much a new kid on the block as far as twitter goes.  With a good number of follows and a humble number of followers this undiscovered gem is definitely a good one!

Kate lives in Wellington and with that come the tweets that are Welly-centric.  I personally don't have any issue with those one's 'cos its my most fave city in New Zealand.  And at the moment living in the capital isn't easy '"Ugh, I can't tell if those are earthquakes or just the heffalump upstairs! The ground is moving #OnEdge"

More than the #eqnz tweets are a series of interesting views into the mind and workings of a very attractive lady who has an amazingly stunning appearance.  She also has a keen sense of what works and what doesn't as far as appearance for others - "It should be illegal to paint a house purple #adelaideroad #berhampore ewwww!"
She is super personable and LOVE's to have a good time - "Rocking out #tinaturner down the road! Invite me to your party #whatslovegottodowithit #lovethyneighbour haha"

And on the flip side she also knows the rules of politeness and courtesy - "Public toilets with no lids...had to flush the toilet really fast and make a run for it #eww #JustSaying...!"

If you scroll through Kate's timeline there are two things that are immediately obvious -
  1. She has a healthy rate of tweeting.  As and when time allows.
  2. She has a high rate of interaction with others.  Because - thats what twitter is right for?
So if I were to have an allocation of 10 descriptive words and I had to make a sentence to best describe Kate, what would they be?

--> Kate is a fun, attractive, honest, genuine, conversational and intelligent woman <-- (Okay thats 11 but hey - they are ALL true!)

And if I could find just one tweet that encapsulates both the person and the twitter personality that is @hurley_kate then it would be this tweet -

"Do what makes you happy, be with who makes you smile,
laugh as much as you breathe, and love as long as you live - Rachel Ann Nunes #loveit"

Random follow #207 - @KIWIreviews

Karl of @KIWIreviews is one of the hardest working blokes in social media today.  Yes there are many people who work as community managers or social media commentators for large companies who work hard.  But if you were to take all the functions of - a sales department, a marketing department and a social media guru then you would understand just how much effort and hard work its taking Karl to create such a great brand as KIWIreviews.

But I think it would be a good idea to separate out the man behind the brand from the brand itself.  So lets start with Karl.

Kark is a really genuine, funny and nice guy.  Having met him in person he is an incredibly nice guy.  If he has a middle name then it would have to be Generous.  With a capital G.  Because there is nothing Karl wouldn't give or share with others if he sees a need or an opportunity to help someone else.  He is an intelligent tweeter who doesn't waste a tweet if he can avoid it.

KIWIreviews is quite different.  KIWIreviews was someone's fantastic idea to get everyday kiwi's using everyday products that can be purchased in most major retail outlets.  So what toy get a real reviews of real products from real people.  What more could you want?  Buy a product and find you either don't like it or is doesn't meet your needs and requirements?  Well you can remove all that uncertainty by doing your homework first.

So what does a tweet look like?  Well lets take a look -

"Nothing says "Time to find a new pillow" like waking up feeling like someone has tried to twist your head off in your sleep."

"Right, off to the kitchen to make my imaginary-award-winning Mac'n'Cheese, packed with Vitamin Bacon!"

"418 emails with subject: "I need a hot guy like you..." - Yeah, very obviously spam... I'm barely luke-warm at the moment."

So this account isn't just all product reviews.  And neither is it all Karl's wit and wisdom shared with the world.  Rather it walks the line and manages to achieve both.  @KIWIreviews are well worth a follow - especially if the idea of winning free stuff appeals to you.  Like lots of free stuff.  Go on - it's worth pushing the follow button for.

Random follow #206 - @korikita

Having a burning desire or dream to do something amazing takes a lot of courage, a lot of effort and a few sleepless nights too.  @korikita is a the passion and desire of one amazing lady to combine her love for outdoor endurance sporting activity as well as the need to look good and feel comfortable at the same time.

Kate is a lady who has achieved some amazing sporting feats and achievements in her life.  From completing an Ironman to completing a few 100km runs this lady knows something about perseverance, patience and commitment.  It takes some kind of brain training to be able to push through all the barriers - mental and physical and achieve those goals.

And the same goes for her clothing company.  Taking a risk on a really great idea and making it happen takes all those same essential skills - perseverance, patience and commitment.  It also takes time, money, hard work and some late nights and early mornings to achieve as well.

One thing about getting a business up off the ground is that it takes the help of friends and family.  You need a lot of goodwill and the occasional favour from people to make it happen.  And the exact same is true for endurance sports events.  It takes a team and a lot of commitment from a lot of people to get you across the finish line.  Also at the end of this year (2013) Kate has made the decision to resign from her current employment so that she can focus her energies entirely on @korikita.  And if there's one thing that she does well - its finishing what she starts.  Through to full completion.

Kate joined twitter not all that long ago so she is still trying to find her feet a bit with the platform.  And just like her personality in real life she has been able to make friends (and followers) in an instant.  Her brilliant smile, bubbly personality and no bullshit approach to life make her instantly popular with those who get the opportunity to meet her.

So what's she like as a tweeter?
  • Fitness - "Metabolic age of a 23yr old!!! Got to love it!!!"
  • Committed - "Heading to Rotorua tough guy. Rain is setting in, misty, foggy and cold. This was a fantastic idea when I entered sat warm at my laptop."
  • Enjoys repeat actions - "Pita pit again! They know my name and my order! Teehee!"
  • Knows her values - "Belief in your ability is more important than having it!"
If you are looking for a tweeter who - knows who they are, has a good idea about where they are headed, will fill your timeline with uplifting positivity then @korikita is the follow for you.  And the next time you're at an ultra running event keep an eye for a very slim, very smiley and talkative yet completely focused blonde ex-pat English woman.  Chances are that could very well be Kate.

The last word for this post goes to Kate who in one tweet summarises her journey in life right now -

"Eeeekkkk! :) more opportunities! Something tells me I'm on the right track with life right now."

Random follow #204 - @aadogsh13

On the 15th of November some years ago now a new life was brought into the world in a small town in the King Country of New Zealand.  in a very small hospital that was equipped for a few things a baby was born.  It was about 5pm on a Thursday afternoon.  After starting the birthing process somewhere around 4 in the morning 13 hours later @aadogsh13 made her way into the world.

With a head full of dark hair, nice light olive skin and tiny hands and feet I was the first person to hold her.  A brand new baby, a brand new (exhausted) mum and a brand new dad.  All together for the first time.  It was at this point that I said the first words after she born "We have a Maddison".

I can still remember the midwife, whose name was Taku, handling this brand new baby and me thinking "You're going to break her!" LOL.  A few days later she was released into our care as her parents.  and it is from that point onwards that we find ourselves here today.

Quite a bit has changed in the years between her birth and where we are now.  Watching @aadogsh13 grow and change over the years has been both special and rewarding as well.  Mornings spent in the cold at the netball courts, attending kindergarten concerts and graduations, starting school, learning to read, being known as locals at the library, riding bikes - all those memories and special moments spent together.

Now she is a beautiful young woman who has an incredible brain and a love for history.  She is a warm and caring friend who always watches out for her friends.  She has a very clear understanding of right and wrong and isn't afraid to hold others accountable to that when needed.  She is also tall, very tall and I wish she would stop growing sometimes!

So what are her tweets like?
  • Well she LOVES Taylor Swift.
  • She is a history buff and especially like ancient Greece and mythology
  • She enjoys reading
  • She LOVES movies - especially Harry Potter
  • She doesn't tweet all that often (cos all the cool kids are actually on Instagram)
Due to her being at the younger end of the spectrum her account is locked.  But she is wise enough to know who to follow and who to let follow.  So if you want to keep up to date with Swifty news or other bits and pieces then send a request (and I'll vet it first).

Just for the record @aadogsh13 is my daughter and I love her.  And I am very proud of who she is and who she is becoming.  And if there were more of her on twitter then the world would be a better place.

Love you Maddy.

Random follow #203 - @MatthewCorban

Gambling is all about risk.  How much risk are you willing to take at any one time on the outcome of any one event?  What would the ability to pick the right outcome be worth to you?  For some people being able to take a gamble on predicting an outcome is a complete rush.  Those are the punters.

Then there are the people who create the situations whereby (in this case) the races are held.  Watching 10 to 15 horses going pound for pound around a racetrack is a beautiful thing.  Imagine what it must be like though being able to either live on a farm where the horses are bred and trained or having a role whereby you interacted at the racetrack with breeders and trainers alike.

Well @MatthewCorban has done all that.  Having lived in the very heart of the mighty Waikato in a beautiful town called Cambridge and now studying at Victoria he is a gentleman of great intellect.  And I must add a (very) young gentleman.

I like that in his twitter bio he lays down in front of you exactly what you're going to get as far as tweets go.  Especially this disclaimer - "Pretends to be an Academic. Occasional smartarse."  And there are a few other things you might want to know about him as well.  Such as -

He knows how to fend for himself -> "Pizza today, pizza yesterday and pizza the day before. Why? Because I'm a 22yo man."

He is irreverent -> "Wellington has been exciting. Huge storms and quakes within a month. Not quite the "dead city". Next the return of the anti-christ #

He is a man of fine taste -> "Can't believe Vuwsa and the Women's group got Miss Victoria University cancelled. Absolute madness."

From what I can tell according to Matthews tweets - he is a really great guy.  He has a very funny sense of humour, a passion for all things horse racing and a fine career in front of him.  As a tweeter he shares the good stuff especially around his favorite topics - food, friends, beer and racing.

So whats not to like?  His tweets are not your average commentating on the news or whatever happens to be on tele at the time.  Rather they are an insight into the mind and life of a young man who has racing in his blood.

Random follow #202 - @KrystleF

Okay I'm going to admit it.  I am a sucker for a beautiful woman.  And to be honest todays tweeter totally ticks that box with a capital B.  @KrystleF is a young lady who has recently returned from spreading her wings overseas and has returned home to establish her life and her career.  Having returned from the UK she has now settled in the nations Capital.  Which quite frankly really is the place to be.  With so many fantastic tweeters Krystle totally raises the bar a little bit further as far as great tweeters goes.

So what is there to like about her?

Well for a start she is really pleasant and happy young lass -> "Thank you @TradeMe I now have a car! It's not the flashest but it's all I need at the moment to get me where I need to go #happy".

Happy people are the best tweeters to follow.  And I don't mean people who are happy 24/7 cos everyone has ups and downs but happy over all.  Krystle has a very smiley disposition that is radiant and smiley and so, so warm.

Krystle is funny.  Being funny really helps cos it means that when people tweet you can better engage with them.  For example -> "After seeing all the distressing Offspring tweets in my timeline, I now realise I follow too many Aussies dammit! #Spoiler"

She is more technologically advanced than the last generation -> "Oh dear god, my Mother just said to me 'Can't you iTube it?'"

Throw the fact that she has good taste into the mix -> "I just had a 20 minute 'how to use crutches' lesson from a rather hot physio #hospitalvisits" <- and you've just about got the full package.

@KrystleF is young, vibrant and beautiful.  Even if those were the only reasons for which you choose to follow her then you would be on to a winner.  But Krystle is so much more than that - both as a person and as a contributor to twitter as well.  She is a happy, engaging, energetic, youthful yet wise lady who knows how to rock out a great tweet.

And to round it all off its safe to say that Krystle is a loving, honest and loyal friend.  And the depth of her friendship is proven in tweets like these -

"Amazing how a 2 hour phone convo with a bestie can really make you feel better"

Random follow #201 - @VisitWaiheke

Auckland is located on an isthmus.  This means that there are two large water expanses on either side and the city itself is located on and around that very narrow strip of land.  The two expanses of water on either side of the city are two harbours.  One harbour is smaller and has its entry/exit point heading towards Australia.  The other harbour is a huge body of water that has many, many islands and other features about it that make it.  One of those islands is the beautiful island of Waiheke.

Personally I have only actually ever been there once and that was over 20 years ago.  From what I understand it is a mixture of playground for the rich and famous mixed with the original culture of creative types and the quintessential hippy personalities.

So it pleases me greatly to see that this little island paradise has its own twitter account.  If you are looking for a quick and quiet get away for a weekend then @VisitWaiheke is the ideal starting point for ideas about accommodation, food and things to do while you are there.

Whats neat about this account is that it isn't strictly a sales account.  Instead it is an insiders view to life on the island.  Photo's of beautiful beaches and boats, ferries and fish.  House boats abound on Waiheke giving a whole new meaning to the term 'mobile population'.  When home owners tire of the view they simple sail away, around the corner and to a new location.  Sounds like magic to me.

Waiheke is also an island of artistic talent and culinary magic as well.  The climate on the island is such that they are able to grow grapes which are then turned into classic and limited edition selections of wine.  Couple that wine with an abundance of fresh seafood and you have a connoisseurs paradise.

So what can you expect from the rest of their tweets?  Well they RT local businesses and points of interest about the island.  They also RT other tourism accounts when they have something to say.  And then there are the photos.  I really love following an account that posts photos of the beach.  (Because where I live is land locked so seeing the beach is something of a treat for me).

If your timeline is wanting a bit of a refresh and you're looking to combine photo's and stories from an exotic location with some ideas about how to get there and where to stay then @VisitWaiheke is the account for you.

Random follow #200 - The McAwesomes

When social media meets real life is when you find out who people really are.  Some are shallow and you wonder why you bother.  Others are full of depth and make your time on social media worthwhile.  Others still cross the boundary between virtual and real life and become real live friends.

For over 12 months now I have had the great pleasure of following on twitter one of the most romantic and good looking couples in social media.  @PhidMcAwesome and @CharisMcAwesome are two people who I am proud to say aren't just friends online but friends in real life.  Based out of the metropolis of Te Awamutu they pretty much own all the foursquare check-ins of the entire town.

So who are they and what are they like?

Phid is an exceptionally nice guy who is head over heels in love with Charis.  He has a couple of twitter accounts that he looks after with @Pixelshopnz being just one of them.  Phid has an exceptional sense of humour and originally being from down Taranaki ways he keeps his feet on the ground and his tweets above the rim.  He keeps his tweets real and isn't afraid to get a bit controversial every now and then but mostly his tweets circle around three things - video games, wrestling and entertainment.

"Money cant buy you happiness , but it can buy you Coffee....and Bacon, and thats kind of the same thing!" <Phid>

Charis is a very, very lovely lady whose smile can charm a room in a flash.  Being a mum to two exceptionally good young men she has her hands full with having to look after three boys in the house.  Her tweeting frequency is not as full on as it used to be but the quality has certainly improved.  She has a fun loving approach that is infectious and bright.

"Made it home without killing anyone #winning #longstory" <Charis>

And the number one contribution this amazing couple make to the world of social media is their weekly radio show - @hashtagradionz.  Week in and week out they sit down behind the microphone and share with the world all the happenings in the realms of Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and every other social media platform that is mainstream.  This labour of love is one contribution to social media that they can totally be proud of.

"We don't condone drinking and making radio. But we enjoy it. @CharisMcawesome" <Hashtag Radio NZ>

With the McAwesome's you can never be too sure of what they are going to tweet next.  They interact both with each other and rest of the twitterverse with ease.  Phid and Charis are even more McAwesome in real life than they are on social media and for that very reason alone they get the very special privilege of being RKT #200.

p.s. not of all the facts in this post are true.  But most of them are.  Any facts that aren't true can be blamed on the consumption of vodka while writing this post.

Random follow #199 - @Themadkiwi1

Kiwis are a global group of people.  We happily share our lives, our friends and family and also our culture with anyone who will take the time to sit down and listen and be a friend to us.  Travelling abroad is something many of us enjoy doing and there are a few who decide that foreign shores are where they would like to call home for a while.

@Themadkiwi1 spread her wings quite a few years ago and has gone in search of adventure in places as far and wide as Uzbekistan, the United States, some of Europe and currently Hong Kong.  Packing up home in one country and then shifting everything you have and own to a different location is not a small thing.  But for some people spending large amounts of time in one particular place just doesn't satisfy their need for adventure or experience.

At the moment @Themadkiwi1 has landed in Hong Kong.  So a lot of her tweets at this point in time are about finding a home, exploring the area, meeting new people and discovering a new city and all that goes with it.  Such as -

"I am now in Hong Kong! Yippy they have Tim Tams and Goldfish. life is good"

"I've just moved to Hong Kong. Bring it on! http://bit.ly/15Dxqtf gotta love this city.not just sky scrapers mountains, forests and beaches"

@Themadkiwi1 is a lady who has a zeal for life.  She has a passion for the finer things and for her friends.  Being no stranger to a good tweetup I am sure it won't take her long to find some locals over there to share a few drinks and nibbles with and share a good twitter story or two with as well.

What I enjoy too is when ex-pats move overseas but make a conscious effort to keep (at least semi) up to date with whats going on at home.  Sometimes people move away and we lose the ability to converse about stuff cos their lives become so wrapped up in where they are or the time zones are just so out of whack that you pass by each other like ships at night.  @Themadkiwi1 appears to have a good ability to keep current with the world and engages with those of us who are still here.  At home.  At the bottom of the world.

So in summary @Themadkiwi1 is a very pleasant kiwi tweeter who has made her way around the world and back again.  She tweets neat stuff, never has a bad word to say and has a zeal for like that if it could be bottled and sold would make her an instant billionaire.

If you are looking for  a really good read that will excite both your mind and your passion for life I recommend you do two things -
  1. Follow her on twitter - @Themadkiwi1
  2. And keep up to date with her blog - "I'm back! Celebrating a return to after a brief injury induced hiatus in my blog posts.Read about my move 2 Hong Kong"

Random follow #198 - @JaneTHoye

@JaneTHoye is a lady who brings passion both to her career and also to social media.  She is the quintessential people person whose life and focus is around ensuring that both customers and followers get value for their investments of time and financial input.

Its really cool that Jane is able to put it out there as well that she is into the tech stuff.  In my opinion (and I am probably very wrong) kiwi female tweeters tend to be consumers of social media rather than the developers and drivers of the technology beneath it.  Having a lady involved with the deep side of technology is fantastic.

Her timeline is something quite extraordinary too.  It covers a plethora of topics mainly around tech but also some really good conversations too.  It can be easy for the uninitiated to follow the more tech accounts and get drowned in tweets of information that may or may not be relevant.  Whereas when you find a fantastic tweeter like Jane you can be assured that only the good tweets get through and if she has taken the time to RT then the story is worth reading.

Whats even better than that?  Jane is an active participant in the #NZLead initiative.  So this is where he people focus and customer-centricness shines through.  She is able to take the best of the Tech world and bring work solutions over into the HR world thereby creating and contributing a positive and progressive view on how things can be done better.

So what does a tweet look like?

The optimist "OMG it's just gone midnight in New Zealand. I'm officially 50. Brilliant party though so will keep on pretending I'm only 21."

The realist "AUD22 a day for wifi? Hotels need to get their act together. I don't pay separately for the electricity or water I use. #Sydney #tourism"

The technologist "Merging offline data cvs file with online data via drag & drop. #boomdata I love it. Want it now. #AdobeSymp"

@JaneTHoye is a lady of a thousand talents who speaks wisely, shares the good tweets and will help to generate new thinking and ideas with you.  Head on over and check her out.  I think she is worth a follow.

Random follow #197 - @BKKJase

Sometimes you find great tweeters.  Sometimes they find you.  @BKKJase is a totally random follow who actually chose to follow me first.  And in turn I hit the follow back button.

Being an international man of mystery makes him a very appealing person to follow on twitter.  He is very much a metropolitan tweeter while also managing to not give away all his credibility.  There is a great mix of the cafeésque tweets about coffee and lunch but these are easily offset by the call to engage with beer.

He enjoys sharing his thoughts and engages in a good debate with people too.  There are lots of lots and lots of conversational tweets going which says he is very much a people person.  Topics you'll find in his timeline range from food to travel, fashion to t-shirts.  Whats even more interesting is his twitter bio which reads a little something like this -

"The Jaseverse: Where math, history, syntax, and perfectly-shaped stubble intersect. BRB.
WINNING AT LIFE."

Jase is a really nice guy who won't give up his man card (even if his dog has a sparkly pink collar) without a fight.  And whats really surprising to me is that he follows @evilkud and I DID NOT KNOW THIS!  So why follow Jase?  What follows now is a comprehensive list of really good reasons to.  From here on I am going to describe Jase in the third person.  Why?  Cos it works.

Jase is super observant. "Wow. That bathroom blowing device really dried my hands awesome - said no one. Ever."

Jase is forward thinking - "I saw this dude riding a motorised unicycle device today and I now want one."

Jase is thoughtful - "Just gave this old dude busking out Irish tunes on his guitar a dollar. He was super nice and appreciative. Love the Irish."

Jase is tall.  "Once, just ONCE I’d love to have a hotel bed where my feet are not hanging out the end."

Jase is good looking.  See here for proof - https://twitter.com/BKKJase

Jase is health conscious.  "Is beer vegan?"

Jase is a very friendly chap. "BRB. WINNING AT LIFE."

Jase is awesome.  That is all.

Random follow #196 - @GilbertCocru

Gillian is the looks, brains and personality behind some of the most amazing twitter accounts that are coming at you out of New Zealand.  Not just one or two but three twitter accounts.  Each with its own unique personality, attributes and special essence.

It takes a lot of energy, love and dedication to be able to do social media right.  It takes even more of those ingredients to tweet about a product or service to people.  But @GilbertCocru has the gift.  Doing twitter right isn't about gimmicks, tricks or games.  It is about authenticity, being honest, being yourself and engaging with those who you follow and them that follow you.

For examples of twitter accounts that do just that you should check out - @LeEsscience and @TINKture.  I have seen and smelt these products and have first hand accounts that they are out of this world good.  One account is all about essential oils and the other is a product to help aid an active recovery product for those with fresh ink work.

Even so @GilbertCocru is more than her products and brands.  She is a beautiful woman with a fantastic husband and loads of style and grace to boot.  Her friends all absolutely rave about her with total respect, adoration and love.

So whats there to like and add to your timeline?  Well for a start with over 55,000 tweets from her own account she is well on her way towards clocking twitter.

She also has a very funny sense of humour - "My Hubs is my hero, he just doesn’t wear his undies on top of his jeans #mysuperman"

Gillian also can be a little late to the game from time to time "Last night I finally experienced Churro’s - OMG!!!! DELISH! But defo an very now and then thing! o_O" but she NEVER has a bad thing to say about anyone.  In fact she is so lovely I can't think of a time I have ever seen anything not wholesome get tweeted by her.

She is a woman on a mission "Tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiired!! Burned 628 calories just massaging today! No wonder I get tired!!! #justfoundout #plusiworkedout" and from all accounts it is totally working as she looks even more fab every day.

If I was given a choice of 10 and only 10 tweeters that I could follow - @GilbertCocru would be on that list.  Why?  Because she tweets EVERYONE!  You can follow Gillians timeline and see a comprehensive who's who of all the coolest tweeters in the land.  She is conversational, funny, uplifting, encouraging and expresses a natural warmth out to the world that only someone who is true to themselves can do.

For a random kiwi tweeter  @GilbertCocru is a living legend.  She is totally worth a twitter follow and from all accounts definitely worth meeting in real life.  Go for it - you'll love her too.  Xx.

Random follow #195 - @michaelgregg

Wine.  Its one of the most talked about topics and subject in social media.  Many people enjoy the quality of it, the pursuit of a good drop and the enjoyment that a bottle shared with others brings both to the senses as well as to the spirit.

@michaelgregg is someone who knows A LOT about wine.  A lot as in the entire lifecycle, process and methods by which wine is made.  Being a vintner for Harvest Estate he has a first hand knowledge and perspective on what the qualities are that make a really good wine.  Being involved, literally, at a grass roots level of production gives him a knowledge that few others may have.

Harvest Estate is located in the beautiful district of Martinborough.  It is a land space that is flat, warm and picturesque area of land that has been found to be ideally suited to the growth of grapes.  The homes are lovely, the roads flat and fast and the climate amazing.

So why would you want to follow someone on twitter whose job is to make wine?  I think the more apt question is - why wouldn't you?  Seriously.  Here's what you'll get from @michaelgregg the tweeter -

The culinary whizz - "Kiwi Pinot Noir for dinner, now to choose some food groups to go with it #dinnerishealthierifyoudontchoosemeatfirst"

The humorist - "At least people are learning to spell Cook Strait correctly ... #brightside @eqnz"

The outdoorsman - "Ooooo ... scallop season opened in Marlborough Sounds today. They'll need some fattening up. I'll check the dive bottles are full anyway!"

Like a good bottle of wine there are many different flavors that will cross your twitter palate with Michael.  He brings a range of tweets, subjects and RTs that both appeal to the sweeter amongst us as well as the more savoury topics that many if us relish.

Michael is a really great tweeter in that he balances his personal account and likes with his passion for growing great grapes and turning out award winning wines.  Harvest Estates also have a social media presence on Facebook if you want to head over and hit the like button.  But this post is all about singing the praises of someone whose career and passion it is to produce fine wine's that the rest of us can savour and enjoy when we are looking for a special moment.

Random follow #194 - @Chandy229

One of the beautiful people of twitter, both literally and in a tweet sense, is the very lovely @Chandy229.  She hails from the deep south and brings with her a husband of many years and a wee swag of teenagers as well.  Chanelle is a really lovely person who always has a listening ear for her twitter friends which she combines with pearls of wisdom for all.

She has quite a few strings on her bow which enable her to both shoot straight but also to keep on track given the many people and places that she goes and interacts with.  I actually think that @Chandy229 would make a fabulous Bond girl.  She has it all - the looks, the glamour and a certain amount of mystery and evasiveness that keeps you on your toes and wondering.

So why do I recommend her?  Because Chanelle is a down to earth, honest and reliable person.  Being a mum she has a wider perspective of the world and she brings a different approach to social media.  Her tweets have a real down home feel and more often than not are actually quite sensible.

But even with her mature approach she is still able to change it up every now and then -

"Watching #TheVoiceAu dam Ricky Martin is as hot as when he was a poster on my teen age bedroom wall! In his boy band #Menudo"

And prolific would be another good way to describe her tweets too.  No more than your average engaged twitter user but more than your novices it would be fair to say.  But in sating that Chanelle is one of the hardest working ladies I know.  She has a farm and family business that keeps her on her toes -

"A massage would be fabulous right about now!! Lifting buckets of milk have not been kind #outapractice"

And then onto her other place of business -

"Legs are killing me!! (Mine not actual random legs)"

(No these are not her legs - but they are a very good replica of them)

If you want someone to follow who is open, honest, genuine, fun and an allround super tweeter - then Chanelle is your lady.  Absolutely, totally your lady.  And to close I would just like to say that having @Chandy229 as a twitter friend has been one of my best choices ever.  I truly look forward to hearing from her and knowing that her friendship is only ever a tweet away.  And she is totally on my list of MUST MEET tweeters from New Zealand.
